Experimentation with armored cars by the American military goes back to 1898. The outbreak of World War I in Europe resulted in the construction of a wide variety of armored cars. None of them, however, deployed to Europe. At the beginning of World War II, British experience in the desert against Rommel served to renew American interest in the armored car.
